Brutal Truth
Brutal Truth was formed in 1990 in New York City by ex-Anthrax bassist Dan Lilker (also of Nuclear Assault and Stormtroopers of Death). The band originally worked under Earache Records, releasing albums such as Extreme Conditions Demand Extreme Responses and Need to Control, as well as an EP and two singles.
The grindcore group claimed to be frustrated with their label and looked for a new partner in music. They landed a contract with Relapse Records, a company with reputable interest in grindcore bands. With Relapse, Brutal Truth released Goodbye Cruel World, a double CD album, and two other albums. Under several smaller labels, the band continued to release singles as well.
In 1999, Brutal Truth broke up for seven years; they re-banded in 2006 and continue to create new albums together. 2008 saw their first new material in nearly a decade, the “This Comp Kills Fascists” compilation. Their latest album, Evolution Through Revolution, was released in 2009.
Together the band has released a total of six studio albums, twelve mini albums, two compilation albums, and a DVD, For the Ugly and Unwanted – This is Grindcore.
Brutal Truth’s current lineup includes Kevin Sharp on vocals, Erik Burke on guitar, Dan Lilker on bass guitar and background vocals, and Richard Hoak on drums. Most members continue playing with other projects as well.
Brutal Truth holds the record for shortest music video of all time in the Guinness Book of World Records. The video, of their song “Collateral Damage,” lasts only 2.18 seconds and includes 48 images shown rapidly, ending with an explosion.
